Clear floor space is needed of at least the dimensions of a 5' x 8' living room rug. Ideally, your cleared floor space would measure approximately:
Length: Your height + 4 feet; Width: Your width (at your hips) + 4 feet [I will bring a foam mat unless your floor has a thick carpet/rug.]
Allow some fresh air to circulate -- leaving a small opening in a window prior to and/or during the appointment will do.
Please abstain from scenting the room in which we will be working, unless lighting a beeswax or soy candle, burning a small amount of natural incense (sage, sweetgrass, sandalwood, copal, etc.), and/or diffusing natural (non-synthetic) aromatherapy essential oils.
for Breema: These are not typically used in Breema, however, you may want to have a sofa cushion or bed pillow available if you think you will need it to be comfortable laying on your back for all (or most) of the session.
for Reiki: Please have a sofa cushion or bed pillow available.
It is best if pets do not have access to the room while we work. If you know your pets will keep to themselves and remain both silent and still during the session, then it is your call whether to allow them access to the room while we work.
Ask for privacy from fellow housemates, etc. (especially if we will be working in an open or common area).
Arrange for someone else to care for small children, etc., during our session, so as to avoid distraction/interruption.
Please wear comfortable clothing, including socks (anklets or longer) and full-length pants. (Long-sleeve shirts are ideal, but short-sleeve shirts are fine, too.) You may feel more comfortable wearing a fresh, clean pair of socks, rather than ones you may have been wearing earlier in the day, especially if your feet have been sweating or closed off in shoes.
Please dress warmer than you might otherwise dress, as body temperatures can drop when receiving bodywork or otherwise resting. If you think you might want extra layers or a blanket later on during the session, please have them in arms reach of our working area, as I prefer not to loose contact during the session, if possible.
Any unnecessary accessories (belts, bracelets, etc.) are best removed, if possible.
If you are receiving your session after working out (dance class, gym, etc.), yard work, etc., please shower and put on clean clothes before I arrive.
BE IN A RECEPTIVE & CLEAR MIND STATE:
Please abstain from tobacco, alcohol, and recreational drugs for at least 12 hours prior to our appointment.
Turn off all phones (or all of their ringers, alarms, reminder alerts, etc.), iPads, computers, or any other devices that may create unnecessary distractions.
Allow at least a half hour before (AND after) the session to be free of any responsibilities, travel, distractions, computer/phone-time, etc. If you have a meditation, chanting, tai chi, &/or other gentle wellness practice, those would be great ways to use your time just before (and after) our work.
BONUS: Spend some silent time in nature, unplugged from your phone, iPad, computer, book/kindle, etc., just enjoying the weather, the sky, plant life, animal life, etc. -- even if it is just 5 minutes enjoying a sunny blue sky, admiring the moon and/or the stars, etc.
Recommended During Appointment (& anytime you feel so inspired):
At the very beginning of the appointment, BEFORE you lay down to receive the bodywork, please:
NOTIFY ME of anything you want me to know about your body, especially tender bruises or any other areas (especially hidden from sight beneath your clothing) that may be sensitive to any pressure.
ASK ME any questions you have about the bodywork to be done.
REMOVE any eyeglasses or other easily removable jewelry/accessories.
Give your body and mind permission to rest, release tension, and be in a purely receptive state throughout the session. Some suggestions to support this include:
Close & soften your eyes.
Variation: With eyes closed, on inhale look to 3rd eye and on exhale lower & release eyes. Repeat for approximately 4 more breath cycles. (Alpha brain waves -- associated with deep wakeful relaxation, inspiration, mindfulness, intuition -- may be stimulated with this eye movement.) You might also imagine/visualize the color blue or purple while practicing this exercise. (Bring the eyes to a soft stillness after a few breath cycles and/or whenever you are ready.)
Circle your tongue above and below the front of your teeth to massage your upper and lower gums.
Soften your jaw.
Soften your tongue.
Deepen your exhale.
Allow your body to succumb to gravity or be heavy. (Please let me do all the work when lifting your arms, legs, and/or head during the session. Your help for that is not needed.)
Notice how your body feels anywhere it makes contact with the floor &/or against your clothing.
Observe/follow your breath.
Variation: Begin with a slight gentle smile and/or with a hand over your heart center. (Release smile and/or hand after a few breath cycles and/or whenever you are ready.)
Allow yourself to be in a place of non-judgment of yourself. Falling asleep, smiling, shedding tears -- no need to resist!
Conversation is best saved for pre- or post- bodywork time, so please save any unexpected questions until the bodywork has been completed. EXCEPTION: Always, always, ALWAYS communicate if you become uncomfortable -- such as if you become too hot, too cold, need a tissue, etc. Please do NOT just "grin & bear it" when a discomfort arrises that could be remedied.
Recommended After Appointment:
Allow at least a half hour immediately after the appointment to be free of any responsibilities, travel, distractions, computer/phone-time, etc. (For example, it is not ideal to book an appointment for 10am to 11am, and then have to run out the door at 11:05am to attend a class, meeting, etc.) If you have a meditation, chanting, tai chi, &/or other gentle wellness practice, that would be great way to use your time just before (and after) our work.
Abstain from tobacco, alcohol, and recreational drugs for at least 3 hours after our appointment.
Check in with yourself as to whether you need more or different self-care practices and see if there is a way that you can honor that need for yourself.
Journal, color, draw or otherwise express your creativity about what you experienced in the session and/or that is otherwise bubbling up in your consciousness. Especially if you had images, memories, insight about your life, etc., expressing/exploring them after the appointment may be supportive to you.
If emotions, memories, etc. came to consciousness during the appointment and you want support in processing them, consider conferring with a trusted friend/mentor, professional psychologist/therapist, etc.
BONUS: Spend some silent time in nature, unplugged from your phone, iPad, computer, book/kindle, etc., just enjoying the weather, the sky, plant life, animal life, etc. -- even if it is just a peaceful 10 minute walk admiring the trees in your neighborhood. You might even appreciate exploring the practice known as Earthing, which involves skin contact with grass, dirt, and/or trees (which are rooted in the earth, versus in a planter/pot). [Touching the trunk of a tree might be a safer practice if the grass or dirt might be contaminated.]
BONUS: If your appreciation of the services I provided to you inspires you to give me a testimonial and/or if you otherwise wish to give me feedback, please do so here.
